Before cranes, the work was about layering squares, exploring line rather than planes of color. Working with crosshatching as mark-making, searching for narrative in the abstract; but still wanting the works to be more tangible. Seeing half-built buildings in DC inspired the use of cranes- the instrument of creation, change, revitalization- yet out of context as the subject of dialogue.
Continuing to explore the Tower Crane Series, these works are combinations of wet and dry mediums on heavy watercolor paper. The images as appropriated compositions in b & w crosshatching indicate toward the universal. Taking artistic license, sketched from images captured around the world (search fickr and find over 10,000 images of tower cranes), then sketch from those sketches until the final work becomes its own. The works are about layers and about questioning perception.
