The selected pieces imaged here were completed in 2005.  A response to a visit to the University of Miami of Ohio, where my close friend,  J. Pouwels was completing his MFA. There I was introduced to Dana Saulnier  the head of the painting department for University of Miami.  Much of the discussion was about figure ground relationships.   My own work at the time was narrative figurative.  The concepts and discussions opened me up to new approaches to my work.  I then set out to investigate this for myself.

Limiting the work to a single shape, the square, as my tool for representation I set out to explore narrative possibilities in an abstract model.   Removing color and using only the square, expression was dependent on line quality and density of forms.  Perspective is achieved by scale and quality of line.  White chalk and graphite offers highlights lending motion to the compositions.

These pieces are a dry mixed media on heavy watercolor paper, 18 x 24 in.
