Evolve Urban Arts Project asked me to bring my art into their Pierce School Lofts to begin an exhibition series reflecting on the issues of urban renewal. I recruited my good friend and artist J. Pouwels to collaborate with me on the project. We combined my enthusiasm to find overlaps between abstraction and narrative within the urban setting and J’s observations of urban blight and its transitional nature.
Together we created a site specific instillation that confronts observers with what would be considered not the appealing side of urban renewal. The piece places the viewer in an uncomfortable environment that redirects usual paths and reflects on the temporary inconvenience that is our changing environment.
You’ll find in these images a visual display of our creative process. From early design concepts and draft floor plans to uniquely designed shave-horses to help expedite the creation of 160 individually unique hand shaved 8 foot poles. Also, take note on the final design layout of the raised platforms that emulate the city blocks that surround the Pierce School Lofts, bringing not only the esthetic but also the relevance of that neighborhood located at the for front of urban renewal in DC.
